The Christian life hasn't changed all that much. Monks practiced all the elements familiar to us today; they worshiped in the small chapel (above right); Luther retreated to a cell for individual prayer and contemplation(right) ; Luther's Bible, with his study notes and comments in the margins (below right); the monastery's orphanage(above left) is now a guest house, where I stayed. Some things have changed, however. In Luther's time, it was illegal for neighboring windows to overlook the monastery walls; now, home owners
can peek into the beautiful garden (right and below left).
